7th May 2022

The sun came out for us as six triples competed for our first trophy of the season in a Round Robin format. After the Draw had been made the bookies made Christine Elrick, Roddy McGeoch & Lee Wilson favourites. They opened their campaign against Diane Mitchell, Isabel Macrae and Jimmy Gillie. Only 6 ends per match and the loss of a two and a three in the first two ends was never going to be recovered as the favourites ran out 7-4 winners. Meanwhile, the rank outsiders of Dod Watson, Claire McDonell & Alex Weir started their campaign against 2nd favourites, Neil Craig, Robert Moorehead & Gwenda Ainslie. The underdogs only won 1 of the first 5 ends but that was a 3 and they limited their opponents to 5 shots over those five ends – a two needed for a surprise draw for the outsiders in the last – and they nearly did it – but only a single scored as they lost out narrowly 5-4. The final match of the first round saw Sandra Shackleton, Anne Clarke & Greig McDonell take on Anne Rooney, Robert Clarke and Leonard Moorehead. Somehow, the former trio took the biggest win of the first round by 6 shots to 1.

Round 2 saw a big 9-4 win for the favourites against the Lenny Moorehead triple and a thumping win for the Ainslie triple against the McDonell trio by 10 shots to 3. To the surprise of the bookies, the Weir triple took out the Gillie trio by a 6-5 scoreline – maybe they weren’t the rank outsiders after all!

An even bigger surprise followed in Round 3 – Dod, Claire and Alex v the undefeated Christine, Roddy & Lee. A tight match and the contest was thrown wide open as the underdogs recorded a terrific 4-3 win. The favourites now were surely Neil, Robert and Gwenda – but they tripped up against the so far winless Lenny, Anne and Robert with a 4-4 draw. No one wanted to take advantage as the final match of Round 3 saw Sandra, Anne and Greig finish 4-4 v Diane, Isabel & Jimmy – the trophy was there for the taking!! After 3 rounds of matches, it was the Ainslie triple that led the way with 5 points, closely followed by the Wilson triple on 4points with the surprise package of the Weir triple also on 4 points.

Round 4 saw the top 2 in action – it was a disastrous start for the Ainslie triple – the first four ends were all lost – 2, 1, 2, 1 and suddenly they were 6-0 down. They picked up a single on the penultimate end and despite a three on the last the damage had already been done as the Wilson trio held on for a 6-4 win. That gave the Weir triple the chance to equal the Wilson score as they took on Sandra, Anne & Greig. The loss of a four on the first end didn’t help their cause but they battled back to pick up 5 shots over the next four ends and going down the last the scores were tied at 5-5. For a moment Greig thought he was going to have to put up with wife Claire beating him in her first ever bowls competition but a single on the last spoiled that story! The bottom two teams then played out a 4-4 draw, not helping either of them stretch away from the other.

So going into the last round of matches, the favourites were back on top with 6 points, with the Ainslie and McDonell triples both on 5. The Ainslie trio did all they could with an 8-2 win over the Gillie trio – they were finished on 7 points. Christine, Roddy & Lee knew that a win for them against Sandra, Anne & Greig would secure the trophy for them. Their opponents were still in with an outside chance of the overall win if they could pick up a good win – in the end it wasn’t even a contest – six ends played and six ends won for the favourites as they secured the trophy. The last match of the day was a high scoring affair between Dod, Claire & Alex and Anne, Lenny & Robert – an entertaining 8-8 draw.

And so, with 4 wins and one defeat, Christine, Roddy & Lee were victorious (the bookies are rarely wrong!) – well done to them. The final positions were as follows:

1st place – Christine, Roddy & Lee (8 points)

2nd place – Neil, Robert & Gwenda (7 points)

3rd place – Dod, Claire & Alex (5 points)

4th place – Sandra, Anne & Greig (5 points)

5th place – Diane, Isabel & Jimmy (4 points)

6th place – Anne, Lenny & Robert (3 points)
